      "Financial Responsibility for All: A Myth or Reality?"

          In this article "Financial Responsibility For All: A myth or Reality?" by Lubie Grujicic-Alatriste shows how young people in the United States involved with financial problems using many credit-cards. First of all, young people don't have enough knowledge and all the information about credit cards. Secondly, they get all  the card companies around their college premises and those companies help students fill out the forms. In contrast, card company never provide detail information about the terms and conditions apply. The third reason is that misrepresenting the problems by the bank employees and just get students sign on the contract papers. These financial institutions never try to protect card holder. Student should be aware of credit cards before signing papers and get into financial problems.

          There is a lot of things to learn about the financial roller coaster from this article. Credit card problems are not a myth, it is a reality now. A perfect knowledge on credit card policy is the most important thing to avoid financial calamities.
          In 2009, my cousin took loan from the bank using credit-card and brought a house. Few months later, the house burned down from an electric heater. She was totally upset on her fate. On the other hand, the insurance company denied to pay for the house. In addition, she could not stop paying house mortgage. Therefore, she had to sold her house and land back in home country and brought money to pay mortgage. That situation made her to realize that how credit-cards effects people financially. I was shocked seeing those problems and tried to help her as much as i can.
          Actually banking system is not highly developed in my country like here in the U.S. People don't use bank cards that much in my home country(Bangladesh). But recently, peoples are using bank cards there. Besides in our country people mostly carry cash money.
          Finally, I think there is no such ways to come out of financial problems; once one get involved. The best way to avoid these problems is to learn before start using credit cards. One should read all the information, terms and conditions about bank card prior to make decision. And it would be the best idea to discuss with parents about every single terms and get directions from them.

BP #6 - Mini Essay on HeLa and Informed Consent

Hela and Informed Consent
          This is a great book with lot of stories and researches. Full of information about The United States around 1950s. The Civil right movements, Segregation, Jim Craw Laws, Discrimination between black and white people, Cancer Research and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

          In the 1950s, the situation was very poor down south of United States. Black peoples were facing many problems at the same period of time. Henrietta Lacks was a gentle black woman from Baltimore. She had a cancer in the cervix. After a little while, she felt so sick and went to John Hopkins Hospital for medical treatment.

          During that time, it was very hard for the black people to get better treatment from the hospital. However, the doctors from John Hopkins checked her carefully. The doctor could not find any problems in the first time and later few months later they found a lot of tumor in her cervix area. By then it was in a bad position for treatment. The researchers of John Hopkins took samples of her cancer without informing Henrietta Lacks and her family.White doctors were unethical. It was unfair for the Lacks family. Later on, Henrietta died because of her cervix cancer. I had no idea about the bad medical treatment and discriminated hospitals until i read the book.
          I don't know too much about researches and medical problems in my home country. In the history we had a big fight for freedom but nothing about medical facts. I personally have no idea about medical matters.
          Now the world has changed a lot compare to the last century. Every aspects of life has been developed enormously around the countries. Medical terms has been changed. Therefore, doctors and researchers have totally different views on patients now. It is totally opposite in the current world to compare to the past. Medical science has developed and so many rule has reformed with that too. Now the researchers cannot do any research as they did before without patients concern.
          There is a lot more to know about the history of United States and medical terms. This book a great source to learn about these things more and more.

                                              Soda Taxes

       Children and adult both loves to drink soda. It is pretty cheap and available allover the United States. All kinds of soda contains high amount of calories which is not good for our health at all.

          Obesity problem in The United States getting bigger last few years. It's very harmful for the children and their family too. When a child gets too fat it damages bone and teeth. These are the common problems now. Government is encountering this problem by raising soda taxes recent years.
          Supports for soda tax getting higher day by day. Parents are more careful about their children. they are trying to change children's habits by developing healthy eating habits. Therefore, everyone is supporting this idea widely. It will change the future of the country.
           In addition, the soda tax could bring a lot of money every year. The government estimated that the amount would be about $15 billion dollar each year and this money is going to help the people under The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service.
           After all, soda tax is big help for human service and it also good for the children. Government should take care of this system properly and this is how our economy would go higher level.

BP #4 - Going Green

Not really..but sometimes I think about sustainablity of food when i shop. Actually i didn't know well about this things before. From now on, i will keep it in my mind all the time.
I try to reduce carbon foot-print when i go to stores. I try as much as possible to recyle things to be a part of our environment.

There is one store close to my home.. I saw, they have some organic fruits and vezetables.

                   Medical research / Cancer research in the 1940s / 1950s

           Medical researchers were looking for a cure of cancer for a long-long time. It is one of the most dangerous diseases that may happen to any person in their life-time. Basically its a kind of tumor that, where the specific cells grow very fast and within a short time it effects the whole body and destroy the natural functions of the body. In 1940s/1950s cancer research in the U.S. was not very well as they are now. On that time the medical didn't have good technology's and better treatment systems. The hospitals were not very much enriched of machines and lab rooms.

          During that time the doctors and the lab researchers were less careful to their patients and some times they do researches on their patients which is immoral. They tried to invent some kind of medication that stops the growth of the cells and which destroys cancer cells. On that period of time, a great cancer researcher named George Gey collected some cancer cells from a patient in his hospital called Henrietta Lacks. Later he found her cells are immortal and those cells help to make cure for thousands of patients who have cancer. Henrietta Lacks died of cervix cancer in 19151 when she was just 31years old but her cells are still alive in the lab rooms and serving the world.

5 reasons of immortality

In 1951, Henrietta Lacks, a poor woman with a middle-school education, made one of the greatest medical contributions ever. Her cells, taken from a cervical-cancer biopsy, became the first immortal human cell line—the cells reproduce infinitely in a lab. Although other immortal lines have since been established, Lacks’s “HeLa” cells are the standard in labs around the world. Together they outweigh 100 Empire State Buildings and could circle the equator three times. This month, PopSci contributor Rebecca Skloot’s book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, tells the story behind the woman who revolutionized modern medicine. Here, five reasons we should all thank Henrietta Lacks.

1. Before HeLa cells, scientists spent more time trying to keep cells alive than performing actual research on the cells. An endless supply of HeLa cells freed up time for discovery.

2. In 1952, the worst year of the polio epidemic, HeLa cells were used to test the vaccine that protected millions.

3. Some cells in Lacks’s tissue sample behaved differently than others. Scientists learned to isolate one specific cell, multiply it, and start a cell line. Isolating one cell and keeping it alive is the basic technique for cloning and in-vitro fertilization.

4. A scientist accidentally poured a chemical on a HeLa cell that spread out its tangled chromosomes. Later on, scientists used this technique to determine that humans have 46 chromosomes—23 pairs—not 48, which provided the basis for making several types of genetic diagnoses.

5. It was discovered that Lacks’s cancerous cells used an enzyme called telomerase to repair their DNA, allowing them, and other types of cancer cells, to function when normal cells would have died. Anti-cancer drugs that work against this enzyme are currently in early clinical trials.

BP #2 - Taking advantage

1.      Taking advantage:

                When I was in 11^th grade, one of my close classmates called me in his house to play video games with him right before our final examination. I was always obsessed to play games and see friends. In the evening time I told my mom that I’m going to the tutorial center and actually I went to my friend’s house to play games instead. When I got his home, he started to tell me about that he didn’t finish his turn paper project for the final and at the end he wanted me to help him. The project was very much important for all the students in our class to pass the final exam and get a good grade also. On that moment I really got angry on him. Since we were good friends I couldn’t deny him helping on that project. I worked on his papers two-hours nonstop to get the project done. It was very hard for me to do the whole thing in this short time but he seems relaxed to me. After that he offered me to play games when I was totally exhausted and mad at him. Then I came home without playing games thinking that he just took advantage of friendliness.

2.      HeLa’s family:

                HeLa’s family feels that John Hopkins took the advantage of HeLa’s cells. I think the whole world still taking the advantage of HeLa’s cells. Medical researchers have found immortal cells from her body which they used to experiment for all the fields that they wanted to do. These cells are the ONLY cells that scientists used to make atomic bombs and medical industries used to make cure for many diseases that are existing in this current world. I feel like we(human beings) are taking advantages of HeLa’s cells till today and in the future too. But, the thing that I don’t like is why HeLa’s family is not getting anything behalf of that. It is really sad that John Hopkins hospital didn’t even let them know about this great thing. I don’t  know who is going to take responsibility to help this family out to get some facilities for Hela’s immortal work but I personally feel guilty for HeLa’s family.
